Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’” (Matthew 22:37 NKJV)
Before I became a believer, I was always annoyed by Christians who spoke of love and peace but weren’t able to answer any of my questions. I’m not talking about the type of questions that are just smokescreens for unbelief (please refer to March 1). I’m talking about sincere questions, such as What makes Christianity different from all other religions in this world? How do you know Jesus was a real person? Why do you trust what the Bible says?
Sadly, these questions went unanswered a lot longer than they should have. I believe there are a lot of people out there who are turned off to the church because they aren’t getting good answers to their questions. Just think how much stronger the church’s witness in this world would be if every Christian were capable of answering those three questions. Imagine if every believer were able to share how Christianity is the only belief system where God is the one reaching out to man instead of man reaching out to God; how secular history corroborates the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth; and how there is an inexhaustible amount of prophetic, archeological, and scientific evidence to prove the Bible is God’s inerrant Word.
Jesus told us that we’re supposed to love God with all our minds. And I believe we can do this by dedicating our minds to the task of educating ourselves on these issues. Buy a few books, take a few classes, or invest in getting information you can use when the questions start coming your way. Become an answering machine for Jesus and watch what He’s able to do with your witness.
Always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear . . . . (1 Peter 3:15 NKJV)
